General Information

Aquila Polonica Publishing is an independent publisher specializing in publishing, in English, the Polish World War II experience—a part of World War II which is virtually unknown in the West.

This amazingly heroic and tragic story of one of the Western Allies was suppressed for decades by the Communist regime that was forced upon Poland after the war, as part of its strategy for controlling that country. Only since the fall of Communism in 1989 have the true facts begun to resurface.

Aquila Polonica means “Polish Eagle” in Latin, and is a registered trademark in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the twenty-seven CTM countries of the E.U. The company is based in Los Angeles, California, where its publisher—who has no Polish background—is located.

We are a member of the Association of American Publishers and of the Independent Book Publishers Association, and our books are distributed to the trade in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and New Zealand by National Book Network, www.nbnbooks.com.

We spent the first three years of our existence acquiring rights to more than thirty books, including the entire backlist of one of the best known authors in this field, to give us a base for our catalogue. Our publishing program opened in the fall of 2009, on the 70th anniversary of the beginning of World War II, with The Mermaid and the Messerschmitt: War Through a Woman’s Eyes, 1939-1940, by Rulka Langer.

Despite being a relatively new company, Aquila Polonica is well on its way to establishing a reputation for quality. Every one of our books to date has won one or more awards. We have been reviewed in major media such as The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The New Republic and Publishers Weekly. Our books have been chosen as Selections of the Book-of-the-Month Club, History Book Club and the Military Book Club; audio rights have been acquired by Audible.com and Brilliance. Translation rights for various titles have been acquired by foreign publishers in a number of countries.

aqp logopolishstudiesassn logo-2011-6-7

The biennial Aquila Polonica Article Prize is awarded under the auspices of the Polish Studies Association, which appoints an independent committee of judges, to the author of the best article written in English during the previous two years on any aspect of Polish studies.

The award carries a $500 honorarium donated by Aquila Polonica Publishing, and is announced during the Polish Studies Association annual meeting at the National Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES).

The award was first presented in 2011 and in the following odd-numbered years: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023.

CO-FOUNDERS

Aquila Polonica was originally founded in 2005 by Terry Tegnazian and Stefan Mucha, who first shared their mutual interests in Poland's largely unknown role in World War II via the internet before meeting and deciding to form a publishing company. Both were experienced professionals in their respective fields before starting the company.

Working together, they brought a wide spectrum of perspectives, knowledge, skills and contacts to the successful launch of Aquila Polonica.

In 2013 through early 2014, Stefan transitioned out of Aquila Polonica to pursue other endeavors.

Benjamin Franklin Awards™

ibpa BenFranklin GoldonGoldLabelFoil 2011 6 1 rNamed in honor of America's most cherished publisher/printer, the Benjamin Franklin Awards™ are bestowed each year by the Independent Book Publishers Association to recognize excellence in independent publishing.

Over more than 30 years, the Benjamin Franklin Awards have become established as one of the publishing industry's premier award competitions. Although initially created by IBPA to recognize independent publishers, the competition is open to all publishers, large or small, whether or not they are members of IBPA.

Publications, grouped by genre, are judged on editorial and design merit by top practitioners in each field.

Submissions are winnowed down to three or four finalists in each category. One winner in each category receives the Gold Award, while the remaining two finalists in that category receive the Silver Award.

The trophies are presented to the publishers during a gala awards ceremony on the last evening of the Publishing University.

Aquila Polonica is proud that every one of its books published so far has been honored with either a Gold and/or a Silver Benjamin Franklin Award—establishing an outstanding track record of excellence in independent publishing.
