November 23–26, 2019 – San Francisco, CA – 2019 ASEEES ConventionAquila Polonica exhibited at the 2019 convention of the Association for Slavic, East European & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) for the tenth year in a row. It was a great opportunity to showcase all our titles, meet old friends, and make new ones! Attending on behalf of Aquila Polonica were president Terry Tegnazian and creative director Ewa Wojciak.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

November 23, 2019 – Aquila Polonica Prize awarded to Natalia Aleksiun – The 2019 Aquila Polonica Prize was awarded to Natalia Aleksiun for her 2017 article “Intimate Violence: Jewish Testimonies on Victims and Perpetrators in Eastern Galicia” (Holocaust Studies, vol. 23, 2017). This biennial prize for the best English-language article on any aspect of Polish studies carries a $500 honorarium donated by Aquila Polonica Publishing. The winner is chosen by an independent committee of judges under the auspices of the Polish Studies Association. The 2019 award ceremony took place at the annual meeting of the Polish Studies Association, held in conjunction with the Association of Slavic, East European & Eurasian Studies Convention in San Francisco. November 22–24, 2019 – Austin, TX – Polish Perspectives at 2019 NCSS – The American Council for Polish Culture (ACPC) organized and manned the Polish Perspectives booth at the 2019 Annual Conference of the National Council for the Social Studies.  Several thousand social studies teachers attended, and browsed more than 200 booths. As in past years, Aquila Polonica was pleased to donate copies of each of its titles for the Polish Perspectives booth, along with a short brochure of our Aquila Polonica titles and a flyer we’ve created titled “Poland in WWII: Quick Facts”—which is a quick summary of the key aspects of Poland’s role as one of the Allies in WWII. Books, DVDs and flyers were given away to teachers before the Conference’s end.

 

 

November 4, 2019 – Warsaw Institute Interview with John Guzlowski – Terrific interview with Echoes of Tattered Tongues author John Guzlowski in the Warsaw Institute Review feature called “Tell us who you are” by Daniel Pogorzelski. “Renowned Polish-American author and poet John Guzlowski shares with us his struggles and ultimate reconciliation with his Polish identity.” Read the interview online or pdf…

 

 

October 8, 2019 – Author John Guzlowski Wins Award – We’re excited to learn that the Polish–American Historical Association has given Echoes of Tattered Tongues author John Guzlowski the 2019 Skalny Civic Achievement Award, which honors individuals or groups who advance PAHA’s goals of promoting research and awareness of the Polish–American experience and/or who have made significant contributions to Polish or Polish–American community and culture. The award will be presented to Guzlowski at the Annual PAHA Awards Banquet on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York City.

 

 

 June 7, 2019 – Nominations for Aquila Polonica Prize due Sept. 1, 2019 – The Aquila Polonica Prize is awarded every other year to the author of the best English-language article published during the previous two years on any aspect of Polish Studies. The award carries a $500 honorarium, donated by sponsor Aquila Polonica Publishing.

Any article published in calendar years 2017 or 2018 wil be eligible for the prize this year. Nominations and self-nominations should be sent to the prize committed by September 1, 2019. The winning publication will be determined by November 1, 2019 and will be awarded at the ASEEES Convention in San Francisco November 23-26, 2019. May 1, 2019 – Jewish Book Council Reading List includes The Auschwitz Volunteer – We are excited to learn that the Jewish Book Council has included our award-winning book The Auschwitz Volunteer by Captain Witold Pilecki in its curated Reading List for the topic of Holocaust/Auschwitz.

 

April 23, 2019 – World Book Day – Today is World Book Day! Established in 1995, April 23 is dedicated to book lovers around the world, to celebrate and promote reading habits, publishing and copyright.

April 5, 2019 – Fighting Auschwitz wins SILVER AWARD in Ben Franklin Awards competition! –  Thrilled to announce that our newest release, Fighting Auschwitz: The Resistance Movement in the Concentration Camp by Jozef Garlinski, has won the Silver Award for History in the 2019 Benjamin Franklin Awards, the premier awards competition in independent publishing. There were more than 1,500 entries this year.

March 19, 2019 – Fighting Auschwitz Finalist in INDIE Book of the Year Awards – Wow, just learned that Fighting Auschwitz is also a finalist in the 2018 INDIE Book of the Year Awards in the category of Adult Nonfiction/History.  The INDIE Awards are sponsored by Foreword Reviews as part of its mission to discover, review and share the best books from university and independent publishers. March 18, 2019 – Fighting Auschwitz Finalist in Ben Franklin Awards – We’re excited to announce that Fighting Auschwitz by Jozef Garlinski has just been named as a finalist for the 2019 Benjamin Franklin Award in the category of History. Winners will be announced in a ceremony held in Chicago the evening of April 5, 2019.

Now in its 31st year, the Benjamin Franklin Awards, sponsored by the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), is the premier awards competition in independent publishing. There were more than 1,500 entries this year. Read the press release…

 

January 2019 – Polish Review on Rogers TV interviews Terry TegnazianAquila Polonica president Terry Tegnazian was interviewed by Elżbieta and Wacław Kujbida, hosts of Polish Review, broadcast on Rogers TV in January 2019. The interview was held on the stage at the Ottawa Public Library auditorium in October 2018, following Ms. Tegnazian’s presentation of a multimedia program entitled “Beyond Bravery: Poland in World War II.”
